Job Summary:
To provide coordination and direction in the operational activities of radiography equipment.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Accurately and efficiently administer daily radiation therapy treatments to patients assigned to the treatment unit.

Rotates to all therapy machines, simulator, and CT. Performs all prescribed or required procedures accurately and efficiently.

Generates e-chart for patients using physician’s prescription and computerized treatment plans. Reads, interprets, and implements complex treatment plans.

Operates and manipulates the mechanical motions of complex radiation-emitting treatment machines, simulators, and CT scanners.

Practices radiation safety to protect patients and staff.

Demonstrates understanding of radiation therapy treatment techniques and treatment rational.

Serves as a technical resource person for implementing new techniques or technology.

Maintains written and computerized records of daily treatments and other records as required.

Synthesizes information and instructions from medical and physics staff to assure accuracy of dose calculations, field placement, and use of beam altering devices.

Evaluates and assesses treatment machine operations; recognizes machine malfunctions and reports them to physics.

Prepares and educates patients for radiation therapy treatments.

Communicates clearly and concisely with all members of the health care team, patients, and families. Practices effective verbal and written communication skills.

Monitors patients’ clinical progress; withholds treatment if necessary and refers patients to medical or nursing staff for appropriate intervention.

Assists in training and evaluation of student therapists.

Adheres to internal quality controls, policies, and procedures established by UTMB and the department. Participates in departmental Quality Management Program.

Maintains valid licenses and certifications as required by UTMB and state law.

Coordinates and monitors work processes and patient flow in treatment area. Reports problems to supervisor. In the absence of the director of clinical operations, assumes temporary supervisory responsibilities.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
Associates degree or radiologic graduate of an AMA accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology. Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, in Radiation Therapy. Licensed by the Texas Department of Health in Medical Radiologic Technology. Minimum two years experience as a staff therapist, working on treatment machines and simulators.
Equipment:
Standard digital or analog radiation therapy linear accelerators, CT scanner, simulator, and computerized block cutting equipment.
Working Environment:

Standard hospital environment.

Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation.

Heavy lifting, moving, and positioning of patients and equipment.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to
this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby
subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.

qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimums
require the prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
