JOB SUMMARY:

To provide the skills necessary for proper coding of all pertinent diagnoses and procedures and to provide optimal DRG assignment after thorough review of medical record and analysis of DRG options.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Selects record from Coding Shelf area according to priority.
  • Reviews patient encounters for accurate code assignment of all relevant diagnoses and procedures.
  • Correctly assigns ICD-9-CM diagnoses and procedure codes and enters appropriate codes into database.
  • Identifies responsible staff and resident physicians for each procedure coded.
  • Protects confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • Participates in section meeting and office in-services.
  • Keeps coding knowledge and skills current through attending continuing education activities and reviewing pertinent literature.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

High school or equivalent.  Two years of experience. AHIMA:  RHIT, RHIA, CCA, or CCS certification required.

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
