JOB SUMMARY:
To assist pharmacists in providing drug distribution, technical services, and
clinical services associated with the preparations, storage, and dispensing of
pharmaceuticals.
MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
-
Maintains the operational integrity of an
assigned departmental area.
-
Retrieves and delivers inpatient medication
orders and supplies.
-
Prepares unit-dose medications specific to
patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies and age (pediatric,
neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
-
Performs medication order entry into the
pharmacy computer system.
-
Assists pharmacists in filling ambulatory
prescriptions specific to patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies,
and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
-
Performs quality assurance/improvement audits.
-
Assists in record-keeping activities in any
assigned area.
-
Maintains adequate drug inventories in
pharmacy area and patient care areas.
-
Compounds bulk and extemporaneous
pharmaceuticals specific to patients needs, including weight and age
(pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
-
Performs automated compounding repackaging and
cart-fill.
-
Prepares sterile products utilizing aseptic
technique (to include the preparation, handling, and disposal of biohazardous
drugs).
-
Reconciles pharmacy/nursing medication
administration records.
-
Communicates effectively with other pharmacy
employees, healthcare professionals, and patients while appropriately
recognizing age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).

Performs intravenous drip rounds.
-
Engages in staff training and assessments.
-
Implements and coordinates emergency downtime
procedures.
-
Maintains a neat clean and organized work
area.
-
Demonstrates flexibility in staffing
assignments.
-
Adheres to internal controls established for
the department.
-
Performs other related duties as requested.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
High school or equivalent and five years hospital/retail clinical experience.
Completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited
training program or 60 hours of college credits. Pharmacy Technician
Certification Board (PTCB) National Certification. Texas State Board of Pharmacy
Registration.
EQUIPMENT:
Standard office and pharmaceutical equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
-
Standard hospital pharmacy environment.
-
Working with the public.
-
Working weekends and shift rotation.
-
May be required to work overtime and extended
shifts during emergencies.
-
On-call rotations may be required.
OTHER:
Must pass UTMB and TDCJ security clearance.
