JOB SUMMARY:

To provide technical skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the phlebotomy assignment and sample processing within the Department of Laboratory Medicine.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs the essential duties and competencies in performing the receiving bench assignments and phlebotomy assignments.
  • Performs computer functions necessary for patient registration, specimen collection, and sample receipt.
  • Accepts patient samples into the laboratory for testing, verifies information, and time stamps each receipt. 
  • Orders the correct laboratory test as requested by the physician in the laboratory computer system, ensuring all required information is entered.
  • Prepares samples for clinical test.
  • Delivers specimens, collected samples, request forms, and patient charts reports to the appropriate laboratory division.
  • Performs blood collection procedures by venipuncture and finger stick methods.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent and three years of related experience. Phlebotomist certification from a nationally recognized organization or registry eligible within six months.

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office equipment. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.

OTHER:

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
