Job Summary:
To provide skilled technical assistance to the autopsy prosector in the dissection of a body.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Completes necessary consent forms with the next-of-kin and medical personnel for the disposition of the decedent, interacts with the funeral home, Anatomy Department, and organ/tissue procurement agencies as required.

Transports the body to the morgue and prepares it for viewing, autopsy and/or release to funeral home.

Gathers medical records and x-rays required by the autopsy physician.

Prepares autopsy room with necessary instruments, equipment and containers.

Takes external and in situ photographs of the decedent.

Prepares and delivers specimens for laboratory examination.
-
Picks up placental tissue.
-
Picks up and delivers laboratory results to the prosector.
-
Sorts, delivers and/or stores tissue and blood for educational and research purposes.

Disposes of remaining tissues and blood.
-
Maintains a computer record of specimens.

Prepares a chain of evidence for the medical examiner.

Obtains a medical legal accession number.
-
Prepares tissue and/or blood as required by the medical examiner.

Contacts law enforcement agencies as necessary.

Reviews charts for disease eligibility of the decedent for research.

Assists with the orientation, training, and supervision of Autopsy Assistant I's.

Adheres to internal controls established for department.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
Associate's degree or equivalent and one year related experience.
Equipment:
Standard medical and surgical instruments. Standard photographic and/or office equipment.
Working Environment:
Standard hospital, clinical and/or morgue environment.
Other:
