JOB SUMMARY: 

To provide advanced technical skills in the diagnostic study of cells. 

MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS: 

  • Screens GYN and NGYN slides accurately and efficiently.
  • Assists in organizing, scheduling, and directing the workload.
  • Assists in development of new techniques and programs.
  • Assists in fine needle aspirations including preparing and screening of the specimen.
  • Prepares and stains slides.
  • Assists in supervising Medical Technicians and Lab Assistants.
  • Participates in continuing education and quality control programs.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: 

Bachelor's degree in related field and one year related experience.  ASCP certified or eligible.  (Note: Bachelor's degree is not required if ASCP certified cytotechnologist graduated from cytotechnology programs before the year of 1988). 

EQUIPMENT: 

Microscope, centrifuges, filtration apparatus, automatic stainer, chemical reagents, and pipettes. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

Standard hospital, clinical and/or laboratory environment.
