Job Summary:

To provide advanced technical skills in preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Prepares tissue specimens of varying complexity on glass slides or in blocks in accordance with special techniques.
  • Trims specimen and fixes tissue in fixing solution for prescribed length of time to kill any organisms present and preserve cellular composition.
  • Dehydrates tissue sections by immersion, clears sections by use of special liquid reagents, and impregnates sections.
  • Reviews tissue samples to ascertain that results are satisfactory for pathological examination.
  • Assists in training students and Histology Technician I’s.
  • Determines when prescribed techniques and apparati should be modified to meet special conditions and to expedite diagnosis.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

High school or equivalent and two years related experience. ASCP certified.

Equipment: 

Standard laboratory equipment.

Working Environment:

Standard hospital, clinical and/or laboratory  environment.
