Job Summary:

To provide technical skills in the preparation of tissue specimens.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

• Receives specimens of tissue from surgical or diagnostic cases, sorts them in accordance with priority and difficulty, and identifies specimens by number.
• Prepares tissue specimens with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. 
• Prepares specimens by frozen section method, by placing tissue on freezing stage of a special microtome, and freezing.
• Cuts thin sections of specimens, using various types of microtome knives and stains sections for diagnosis.
• Prepares solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures.
• Adheres to internal controls established for department.
• Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

High school or equivalent and one year related experience. ASCP Certified or eligible for certification.

Equipment: 

Standard equipment necessary to perform histology techniques in the laboratory.

Working Environment:

Standard hospital, clinical and / or office environments.
