JOB SUMMARY:
Provides administrative and advanced technical skills necessary in organizing,
supervising, and performing various histocompatibility procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Schedules work assignments within the
section.

Serves as departmental liaison to the
Pediatric Renal Transplant committee.

Instructs new employees, section personnel
and students in new and established laboratory.

Assists Chief Technologist in maintaining
employee competency assessment program.

Responsible for proficiency in laboratory
safety.

Collects and monitors Quality Assurance and
Quality improvement data, prepares Quality Improvement reports and evaluates
quality control procedures.

Assists in ensuring compliance with
regulatory agencies (ASHI, CAP. ETC.) and in preparation for laboratory
Inspections.

Assists in development and update of
laboratory manual.

Evaluates new testing procedures and
techniques.

Performs histocompatibility testing for
transplantation and disease associations.

Draws blood from normal control subjects as
necessary and conducts specialized blood tests to determine antibody level
of transplant recipients.

Assures accuracy of results and reports to
transplant surgeon and other appropriate personnel.

Evaluates immunocompetency of transplant
patient prior to and following the procedure when necessary.

Coordinates donor/recipient information and
status with transplant team.

Maintains complete records of transplant
patients.

Prepares and enters test data and results
into computer.

Respects privacy and confidentiality of all
patients and their laboratory and tissue examination results.

Adheres to the internal controls established
by the department.
MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or equivalent in related field and
three years of histocompatibility testing experience. Certification as a
Histocompatibility Technologist by the American Board of Histocompatibility and
Immunogenetics (ABHI).
EQUIPMENT:
Standard laboratory equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:
Participates in on-call rotation schedule. Standard laboratory environment.
May be exposed to infectious disease-bearing specimens and radioactive
materials.
OTHER:
Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to
this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby
subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
