Job Summary:

To provide assistance to staff pathologists and residents in preparation of surgical specimens.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Assure correct accessioning of all surgical specimens, dictation and complete dissection and complete dissection of all tissue specimens, selection and submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination, preparation of tissue cassettes for automated processing, photographing gross specimens and completion of photomicroscopy duties.
  • Prepare frozen section, electron microscopic sections, and gross specimens as teaching specimens.
  • Assist in quality management programs.
  • Oversee maintenance of equipment, laboratory supplies and work areas.
  • Assist with resident and student teaching. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with families, physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Adhere to internal controls established for department.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Certified by the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistant; OR, must have a Bachelor’s degree or Doctorate of Medicine plus completion of two years of anatomical pathology residency training.

Equipment: 

Standard pathology equipment.

Working Environment:

Work performed indoors, standing, walking or sitting at a bench or desk. Hazards include: mechanical, electrical, explosive radiation fume/odor, chemical blood and/or body fluids sharps, toxic waste skin irritants respiratory irritants.

Other: 

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
