Job Summary:

To provide the supervisory and advanced technical skills required to coordinate, supervise, and participate in the work of a major section of a cytogenetics laboratory.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Organizes the workload within the assigned section of the laboratory: scheduling work assignments, maintaining quality control of data generated, directing the laboratory procedures, and generally effecting the efficient utilization of methodology and equipment.
  • Notifies the laboratory director and the referring physician of abnormal findings.
  • Coordinates the technologists with respect to the solution of technical problems and the interpretation and preparation of difficult findings.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of cytogenetics training programs for trainees, medical students, resident physicians and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Provides laboratory direction including input on personnel, major technical changes, billing policies and equipment purchases. Collects and organizes research data for project reports as assigned.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required. 

Required Education / Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related field and five years of experience. Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics by the National Certifying Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.

Equipment: 

Standard laboratory and darkroom equipment.

Working Environment:

Standard hospital, clinical and/or laboratory environment.
