Job Summary:
Directs
the planning, implementation and evaluation of Anesthesia Support. Assures
maintenance of an environment that is conducive to professionalism and learning.
Coordinates the delivery of services to the Anesthesiologist. Functions as the
coordinator of all Anesthesia Support Service activities. Assists the
Anesthesiologist with patient care when needed.Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Assists in the coordination of the planning, implementation
and evaluation of Anesthesia Support Services activities.

Serves as a communication liaison between Nurse Manager and
Director of Perioperative Services and staff.

Facilitates and evaluates the implementation of innovative
management techniques.

Supports, implements and interprets philosophy, policies,
procedures and standards.
-
Assures staffing requirements, supplemental and emergency
needs are met in accordance with cost-effective guidelines and is kept informed
of changing needs by regular rounding and audits.

Assists in recruitment and selection of staff.
-
Counsels and evaluates personnel as necessary.
-
Provides merit review and recommends promotions to the
Director of Perioperative services.

Develops close working relationships with all health care
personnel and physicians.
-
Recommends orientation and inservice needs of staff and
ensures personnel’s participation in orientation or educational offerings.
Participates in provision of inservices for staff and Anesthesia Residents.

Provides follow-up report to the Director for all unusual
occurrences.
Maintains clinical practice skills.

Assists personnel in the resolution of complex problems.

Participates in clinical care conferences and quality
improvement activities.

Assists in the utilization of resources within UTMB Hospitals
and between hospital and community for continuity of patient care.

Meet with members of other units to work out changes and
problems and to assure the efficient operation of the Anesthesia Support
Services.

Cooperates with the faculty of educational institutions to
provide learning experiences for students, e.g., medical, nursing and allied
health.

Participates in and supports programs of the Department of
Anesthesiology and UTMB Hospitals.

May participate in hospital committees.
-
Participates in quality assurance programs, e.g., auditing
clinical care, patient care conferences, care plans and charting documentation.

Coordinates quality control procedures to assure the legal,
professional and institutional standards of UTMB are met.
In collaboration with others, assists in setting standards of care.

Submits reports of service provided.

Meets with physicians, nursing personnel and allied health
personnel in the development of short long-term goals for the delivery of
services.

Performs and assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as
directed.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
Graduation
from an approved Respiratory Therapy program and/or graduate of Anesthesia
Technician/Technologist Training Program with three years experience in a
clinical setting, including at least one year of supervisory experience.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapy
Technician (CRTT) and licensed as a Respiratory Practitioner by the Texas
Department of Health. Certified Anesthesia Technician/Technologist.Equipment:
Standard
patient care instruments, related supplies, and mechanical devices used in
Anesthesia Support Services and Pulmonary Care Services.Working Environment:

Work environment is located in a comfortable indoor area.
-
Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or
fumes could sometimes cause discomfort.
-
Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required, such as
walking, standing, squatting, reaching, pushing, puling, performing CPR and
lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients.
-
Lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
-
Vision, hearing, talking, and sense of touch abilities must
be adequate to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as
reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details,
sending and receiving clear and accurate oral and written communication.
-
Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be
needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs.
-
Shift work may be required.
-
Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to
avoid injury.
-
May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable
diseases, blood pathogens, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents, and disoriented
or combative patients or others.
-
May be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in
situations deemed necessary by the Chief Nursing Officer, Nursing Director,
and/or Nurse Manager.
