Job Summary:
This position provides advanced technical and supervisory skills in the performance and direction of non-invasive tests used in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. Responsibilities include performing a full range of non-invasive vascular tests, quality assurance and statistical input for accreditation, and training and supervision of assigned staff in the performance of vascular testing in a patient care and academic/research environment.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:
- Operates ultrasound equipment for data acquisition, reconstruction of images, documentation of images and performs quality control measures for the purpose of ensuring optimal quality images.
- Prepares a summary of technical findings for interpretation by vascular surgeon.
- Provides preliminary technical interpretations to ordering
physician(s).
- Applies the profession’s code of ethics in all aspects of practice.
- Practices accurate and timely completion of scheduled and unscheduled work to maximize productivity.
- Supervises and gives direction to assigned staff, and provides assistance to rotating students, interns and residents.
- Performs data collection for quality assurance and research programs, as required by the Inter-Societal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories
(ICAVL).
- Performs duties related to documentation, and equipment/supply evaluation and maintenance.
- Practices safety measures in Environment of Care.
- Assists the Manager with the maintenance of laboratory accreditation via ICAVL and JCAHO through standardized protocols.
- May act as technical supervisor of the vascular laboratory, in the absence of the Vascular Ultrasonography Manager.
- Maintains and schedules maintenance and repair of equipment following maintenance contract to eliminate or decrease downtime of equipment.
- Participates in research projects.
- Maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times
- Is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of vascular disease and new procedures, as they evolve.
- Adheres to internal controls as established by department.
- Performs related duties as required.

& Abilities
Work requires ability to:
- Utilize ultrasound related equipment;
- Interact with patients regarding procedures;
- Move and position equipment and patients;
- Read, write, and interpret exams; and
- Determine methods and approaches to work problems.
Required Education / Experience:
Must meet one of the three following educational/experience requirements:
Satisfactory completion of a formal vascular technology training program (1-4 years) and 3 years full time clinical experience in a dedicated vascular laboratory. Active status RVT required
– or –
Graduate from a diagnostic ultrasound training program (2-4 years) with at least 3 years additional full time clinical experience in a dedicated vascular lab and active status RVT
– or –
Approximately two years of college with emphasis on the biological sciences with a minimum of 3 years full time experience in a dedicated vascular laboratory and active status RVT.
Certified as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
(ARDMS).
Equipment:
Ultrasound equipment, and other laboratory equipment commonly used in a non-invasive laboratory. Standard office equipment.
Working Environment:
- Work environment is located in a comfortable indoor area.
- Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort.
- Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required such as walking, performing CPR, standing and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients.
- Frequent lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs.
- Vision, hearing, talking, and sense of touch must be adequate to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, sending and receiving clear and accurate oral communication.
- May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents, and disoriented or combative patients.
- Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret
visual, auditory, and sensory input.
- Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to avoid injury.
- May work extended shifts as necessary to complete job objectives.
