Job Title:  Blood Bank Donor Technician III

Job Summary:

Collects blood by venipuncture or automated blood collection techniques from donors and/or patients. Assists in training and education of the donor room staff and UTMB students. Processes whole blood and apheresis collections into components. 

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Effectively communicates with donors and patients and accurately provide answers to donor's questions, follows up on complaints, or promptly responds to donor/patient needs in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ensures all donor collection staff displays a courteous and caring manner in daily contact with donors, patients and other staff members. 
  • Ensures all prospective donors are evaluated accurately for blood donation by obtaining medical history, and performing physical exam. 
  • Knowledgeable on all applicable donor selection criteria; aids others on follow up of aberrant results and accurately explains reasons for deferral to donors. 
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of training and continuing education programs. 
  • Skillfully performs and ensures all routine whole blood collection venipunctures or apheresis procedures are completed according to standard operating procedures.
  • Manufactures red blood cells and other components derived from whole blood. 
  • Runs and assists in training personnel in performing tests on the hematology analyzer.
  • Accurately enters donor, patient and product information into the laboratory computer system.
  • Assesses donor collection and processing problems and determines appropriate action. 
  • Ensures the donor center and processing laboratory are maintained and well supplied and provides input into the acquisition of additional equipment and supplies. 
  • Ensures all personnel follow, adhere to and maintain the division to be in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards and regulations. 
  • Ensures donors and patients are properly identified according to hospital protocol prior to whole blood or specimen collection. 
  • Participates in and ensures that the collection of data for statistical purposes is performed in a proper and timely manner.
  • Determines, prepares and assigns personnel, equipment and supplies that will be needed for blood drives or automated blood collection procedures.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of training and continuing education programs for students and residents. 
  • Assists in the development of protocols, policies and procedures for enhancement of donor center or blood processing effectiveness. 
  • Drives and assigns personnel to drive Blood Bank vehicles as necessary. 
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

High School graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in customer service environment including two years of whole blood or apheresis experience in an AABB accredited donor center. CPR Certification.

Equipment: 

All equipment necessary to perform whole blood collection venipuncture or automated blood collection devices..

Working Environment:

Standard hospital donor center and/or donor collection setting with typical hospital environmental hazards and concerns. Must be able to endure frequent standing and bending for long periods of time.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
