Job Summary:
Performs and provides knowledge in the screening of prospective blood donors and the collection of blood by venipuncture and automated blood collections from donors and patients. Assists in the manufacture of red blood cells and other components derived from whole blood.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Effectively communicates with donors and patients, ensures donor questions are answered promptly, follow ups on complaints, or promptly responds to donor/patient needs.

Displays a courteous and caring manner in daily contact with donors, patients and staff.

Evaluates prospective donors for blood donation by obtaining medical history and performing physical exam.

Follows up on aberrant results and explains reasons for deferral to donors.

Skillfully performs routine whole blood collection venipuncture procedures using sterile technique.

Assists in the collections of automated blood collections.

Accurately enters donor/patient information into the laboratory computer system.

Assists in the processing of whole blood into red blood cells and other components.

Performs basic quality control procedures in the processing lab under supervision.

Maintains donor/patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records.

Assesses problems related to laboratory data, and difficult blood collections and determines appropriate action.

Ensures the donor center is maintained and well supplied and provides input into the acquisition of additional equipment and supplies.

Follows, adheres to, and maintains the division to be in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards and regulations.

Performs tests on the hematology analyzer.

Identifies patients according to hospital protocol prior to specimen collection.

Prepares and assigns personnel to prepare equipment and supplies for blood drives.

Participates in the collection and reporting of Blood Bank statistical data.

Drives blood bank vehicles as necessary.

Adheres to internal controls established for department.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
High school graduation or equivalent and two years of work experience in a customer service environment including one year of experience in an AABB accredited donor center. CPR Certification.
Equipment:
All equipment necessary to perform whole blood collection venipuncture.
Working Environment:
Standard hospital donor center and/or donor collection setting with typical hospital environmental hazards and concerns. Must be able to endure frequent standing and bending for long periods of time.
