Job Title:  Blood Bank Donor Technician I

Job Summary:

Screens prospective blood donors and collects blood by venipuncture from donors and patients. Maintains proper controls as required by regulatory agencies and UTMB policy.

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Communicates in a professional, courteous and effective manner with donors and patients and responds to any complaints. 
  • Screens prospective donors for blood donation by obtaining medical history, and performing physical exam. 
  • Follows up on aberrant results and explains reasons for deferral to donors after consulting with supervisor if necessary. 
  • Performs routine whole blood collection venipuncture procedures using sterile technique. 
  • Enters donor/patient information into the laboratory computer system.
  • Maintains donor/patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records.
  • Performs inventory counts on equipment and supplies and informs supervisor of low inventory levels. 
  • Keeps blood drawing area well maintained and equipment clean and well organized.
  • Assists in collections and reporting of Blood Bank statistical data. 
  • Assists in preparing equipment and supplies for blood drives.
  • Assists in performing tests on the hematology analyzer.
  • Identifies patients according to hospital protocol prior to blood collection.
  • Assists in driving Blood Bank vehicles.
  • Adheres to internal controls established by department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

High School graduation or equivalent. Minimum of 6 months phlebotomy experience in an AABB accredited donor center and competent in donor screening and collections. 

Equipment: 

All equipment necessary to perform whole blood collection venipuncture.

Working Environment:

Standard hospital donor center and/or donor collection setting with typical hospital environmental hazards and concerns. Must be able to endure frequent standing and bending for long periods of time.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
