JOB SUMMARY: 

To participate in nosocomial infection surveillance, prevention, and control activities for the University of Texas Medical Branch. 

MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS: 

·        Evaluates risk of patients and employees after exposure and completes work up.

·        Acts to recognize trends of disease and establishes controls.

·        Uses the medical literature to establish protocols for appropriate culturing of the environment and patient.

·        Answers questions when on-call and seeks advice for difficult situations.

·        Analyzes nosocomial infection data and uses it in discussions.

·        Initiates new programs based on microbiology reports.

·        Coordinates the infection control team on various projects.

·        Documents and identifies problems and keeps notes.

·        Develops innovative teaching methods for educational classes on infection control.

·         Adheres to internal controls established for department.

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: 

Bachelor's degree in nursing, medical technology or related field.  Two years of related experience in addition to four years of infection control experience. 

EQUIPMENT: 

Standard hospital, laboratory and office equipment.    

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

Standard office and patient care environments.
