Job Summary:
Performs clinical hygiene
procedures under the supervision of a dentist. Performs direct and indirect
patient care procedures as well as general clinical and clerical support tasks,
as specifically delegated or directed by the dentist supervisor. Performs unit
level community health task. Work includes tasks which the dental hygienist is
legally trained and qualified to perform and which are necessary for the
efficient delivery of quality dental care.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:
- Contribute to the
success of UTMB Correctional Managed Care Organization.
- Takes and records
patient health history and vital signs; performs radiography, dental
laboratory techniques, inmate oral health orientation, and oral health
orientation, and oral health education and counseling.
- Provides dental
screening; performs removal of calculus, deposits, or accretions from the
natural and restored surfaces of teeth and dental prostheses; performs root
planing or the smoothing and polishing of roughened root surfaces of exposed
teeth; performs topical application of cavities preventive agents and plaque
indexes.
- Coordinates for the
availability and accessibility by clinic staff of appropriate oral health
education materials and oral health aids; provides instruction and technical
guidance for other clinic staff in the prevention and control of dental
disease.
- Maintains general
clinic orderliness and cleanliness; performs sterilization and disinfecting
in instruments and equipment; performs general clerical tasks including
patient scheduling, coordinating clinic visits, collecting and assembling
patient treatment information and data.
- Monitors the overall
unit/clinic oral health program and prepares reports on its effectiveness.
- Performs related duties
as required.
Required Education / Experience:
High school or equivalent.
Licensed as a dental hygienist by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.
Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Knowledge / Skills /
Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge
of modern practices and procedures in the prevention and control of dental
disease at the individual, group, and community level.
- Thorough knowledge of
current dental office practices and procedures in the delivery of dental
care and in infection control procedures for the safety of patients and
staff.
- May be required to be
on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by a
designated UTMB/CMC Systems Nursing Services and Administrator. Able to work
under stress and be emotionally capable of coping with complex and/or
changing activities.
