JOB SUMMARY:
To oversee, in collaboration with the Laboratory
Director/GAVS Core Director, data management, scientific reporting and
manuscript preparation for research on the pathogenesis of viral diseases in
animal models. To supervise and maintain the centralized data management and
reporting of data results preclinical studies of antiviral drugs and vaccine
candidates including molecular biology, basic virology methods including
serological/ cell-based assays and histopathology and to research, as needed,
experimental approaches and procedures to provide guidance to rotation students,
laboratory technicians and other designated research staff.
Design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of results of molecular virology
experiments; training or provide consultation with selected staff in necessary
techniques. Writing and review of preclinical study protocols for conduct of
animal studies for exchange with Principal Investigator, external study sponsors
and study personnel.
Major Duties/Critical Tasks:

Serve as Data Manager under
supervision of the Lab Director, including:
supervision of data management team to
accomplish daily reporting of data to Lab Director.

Work with the Laboratory Director and
research staff to prepare scientific reports for ongoing preclinical
studies, and to prepare manuscripts and research grants for sponsor and/or
peer-review.

Processing of data and analysis of results
for ongoing preclinical (animal) studies including: perform statistical
analysis and provide written interpretation of statistical analysis
including power analysis for scientific grants and for submissions to UTMB
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Develop and implement
standard operating procedures
(SOPs) for centralized data management system used in ongoing studies and
for establishment of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)-compliant studies (FDA
21CFR Part 11).

Coordinate presentations on
organization and conduct of animals studies, in vitro assay conduct,
and data management with scientific personnel for on-site sponsor visits.

Assist in the writing and review of
preclinical study protocols for conduct of animal studies for exchange with
Principal Investigator, external study sponsors and study personnel.

Coordination of research proposal submission
to apply for research grant and contract funding.

Supervise rotation students in Experimental
Pathology Ph.D. Program and supervise selected technical laboratory
personnel.

Working across multidisciplinary teams as
laboratory liaison between Lab Director and laboratory personnel in
communicating with federal, industry and academic sponsors/collaborators,
UTMB institutional/administration (e.g., UTMB GLP Program Office/Research
Services).

Assist Laboratory Director and designated
scientific personnel in preparation of data summaries for poster or oral
presentations; supervise clerical personnel in formatting of figures and
preparation of PowerPoint graphics for presentations.

Prepare reviews of scientific literature and
summaries of original research conducted in Principal Investigator’s
laboratory group for grant collaborators in joint submission of research
proposals, e.g., NIH R01, UO1 and SBIR grants.

Work with the Laboratory Director to draft
responses to sponsor inquiries and peer-review critiques received on
scientific reports, grants and manuscript submissions.

Writing and editorial review of SOPs for
basic molecular, cell-based and virology techniques and for data management
system.

Meet with and communicate study design for
consultation with contract biostatisticians and provide oral and/or written
summary to Principal Investigator.

Supervise research staff in
completion of ongoing research projects and provide technical guidance in
molecular virology laboratory.

Provide guidance to other personnel on
design of molecular virology experiments.

Presenting findings orally to
colleagues at academic conferences or visually through the production of
academic posters which summarize the nature of the work, the methodology and
key results.

Ensure completion of designated tasks for
ongoing studies in the absence of Laboratory (Lab) Director.

Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 3 years of related experience.
EQUIPMENT:
Standard office and laboratory equipment.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:
Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments. May be
exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, harmful
chemicals, and/or disoriented or combative patients.
