JOB SUMMARY:

Conducts variety of non-routine research assignments and experiments in a high containment facility including BioSafety Levels 3 or 4.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Plans, coordinates and directs complex research experiments following general technical procedures.

• Performs functions of research projects utilizing bio-hazardous substances.

• Performs technical services such as tissue sampling, blood draws, anesthesia and injections.

• Conducts research techniques as required by investigator.

• Establishes and follows specific protocols.

• Establishes and oversees quality control measures for assigned project operations.

• Contributes to scientific analysis and interpretation of projects.

• Orders and maintains lab inventory of supplies, animals and equipment.

• Maintains records of all tests performed and data collected, compiles and tabulates data, provides analysis of results, and engages in long-range planning.

• Maintains knowledge of biohazard operations.

• Adheres to internal controls established for department.

• Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in basic science or equivalent and 5 years of related experience with 2 years experience in a BSL 3 or 4.  Or, Master’s degree in basic science or equivalent and 2 years of related experience required, one year in a BSL 3 or 4.

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

High containment animal facility environment. Pregnancy may become a safety factor in some laboratory animal science duties. Potential exposure to radiation and biohazards. Requires completion of appropriate vaccinations.
