JOB SUMMARY:

Support research and development activities by organizing, directing and participating in projects requiring highly skilled machining fabrication in connection with design, construction, operation, maintenance and repair of scientific or mechanical equipment, adhering to high scientific and engineering standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs skilled fabrication, modification, assembly and repair of highly sophisticated instruments for complex scientific research, engineering and/or teaching projects.
  • Trains other members of technical staff as needed.
  • Discusses and/or advises clients regarding various projects. 
  • Fabricates special tooling as required for special projects in research, patient care, or laboratory areas.
  • Interprets design, drafts rough sketches for priority jobs and assures completion within specified time limit. 
  • Plans and estimates time and costs of material and labor requirements.
  • Ensures safe machine shop operations and evaluation of shop equipment, including maintenance of shop inventory, records, materials and purchase orders.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Associates degree, or equivalent training or experience, and three years experience as a journeyman level machinist including experience with machining and fabricating projects with plastics and metal. 

EQUIPMENT:

Standard mechanical / electrical equipment in association with lathes, mills and CNC.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard machine shop environment with safety issues surrounding mechanical and electrical equipment.

OTHER:

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
