JOB SUMMARY:

Perform at a journeyman or master level in at least three (3) distinct industrial/commercial trade crafts as approved by Facilities Operations and Management (Physical Plant Maintenance) management (Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation/Electronics, HVAC, Structural, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms) for work associated with research and healthcare specialized systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs journeyman or master level work in the designing, construction, installation, programming, maintenance, and operation of specialized systems of UTMB.

  • Coordinates commissioning of specialized systems on new construction or renovation projects.

  • Maintains proper building operating parameters to maintain the integrity of specialized systems.

  • Creates spreadsheets (or by other means) and maintains records for reporting requirements.

  • Confers with users and management in order to gain an understanding of their needs and/or provides technical advice.

  • Uses system expert skills and current diagnostic techniques to identify equipment problems and repairs.

  • Successfully participates in the FOAM sponsored in-house craft trade training program (currently NCCER).

  • Uses specialized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot equipment and systems.

  • Makes recommendations for scope, major repairs, and budget on equipment purchases and installs.

  • Reads and interprets technical manuals. Also, provides “marked up” blueprints / drawings for corrections when needed.

  • Performs work from written or verbal instructions, specifications, blueprints, or wiring diagrams.

  • Designs and performs advanced predictive maintenance on specialized equipment and systems.

  • Creates and implements standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for specialized equipment and systems.

  • Proactively maintains all aspects of assigned area of responsibility and serves as liaison between area technician, customers and FOAM management.

  • In addition to regular shift, provides support/ response to the institution that operates 24 hours a day seven days a week.

  • Participate in disaster/hurricane preparedness list i.e. E1A (Ride out team) or E1B (Recovery team).

  • Assist with programming and training of hand held work order system devices.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

 

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

High School degree or recognized equivalent and at least three industrial/commercial journeyman level trade crafts as approved by FOAM management (i.e. Plumbing, Mechanical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms) demonstrated by one of the following:

·        Texas state license or approved equal license

·        NCCER certification

·        UTMB approved certification

·        Community college certification or associate degree in a related field.

Must have six years journeyman level experience in at least one of the above listed crafts.

 

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office equipment, standard industrial mechanical hand tools, power tools, and associated test equipment.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.  May be exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases and harmful chemicals. Some exposure to weather and physical hazards.  Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards and may be required to work in high locations or crawlspaces. 

  • Exposure to areas under construction.

  • Usual working conditions found in craft shops and mechanical rooms.

  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions or temperature extremes.

  • Exposure to electrical/mechanical hazards.

  • Proper safety and precaution must be closely observed when operating and repairing specialized equipment and systems.

  • Climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops of high elevation.

  • Work in confined spaces such as ceilings, under floor crawlspaces, and manholes.

  • May be required to work extended hours or rotating shifts.
