Job Summary:
To be responsible for decisions involving the safe operation of the vessel while at sea.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Responsible for the logistics, planning navigation and the safe operations of a research vessel for a scientific party.

Responsible for providing the interface between the power system on the research vessel and the scientific equipment aboard and for the operation of a maintenance shop for other small boats and associated equipment.

Assists in diving operations required for the Marine Medicine Program.

Locates and marks specific sites at sea and in the estuaries where sea animals required for biomedical research may be readily found.

Supervises the activities of the Boat Pilot and the Deck Hand.

Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
High school equivalent and five years of related experience. USCG Ocean Operator's License required.
Equipment:
Diesel engines, rigging, navigation equipment, and standard maintenance equipment.
Environment:
Long hours while at sea and exposure to severe weather conditions.
Other:
Positions subject to DOT regulations which include drug and alcohol testing. Testing includes pre-employment, random and for cause.

Any
qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimums
require the prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
