Job Summary:

To provide language assistance by means of verbal interpretations for all medical communications between UTMB's staff and patients, patients' families, and visitors. 

Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Provides skilled verbal interpretation services in person and over the phone.
  • Executes dispatching duties as assigned and schedules appointments for services.
  • Acts as liaison between staff and patient/visitors to meet their needs.
  • Supports cross-cultural communication throughout the institution by sharing cultural factors influencing health behaviors.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of volunteers and medical interpreters.
  • Develops and maintains records and produces reports by means of database.
  • Assist the supervisor in a variety of tasks as determined by the supervisor.
  • Follows institutional and departmental policies and procedures in all situations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education / Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of oral translation experience. Must speak, and read English and target language fluently. 

Equipment: 

Standard office equipment.

Working Environment:

Standard hospital, clinical and/or office environments. Rotation shifts which include weekends. Must possess the ability to stand for extended periods and walk throughout the work shift.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
