Job Summary:
To provide language assistance by means of verbal interpretations and translations of materials for all medical communications between UTMB's staff and patients, patients' families, and visitors.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:

Provides skilled verbal interpretation services in person and over the phone.

Translates accurately written materials between English and the target language(s).

Understands and uses medical terminology correctly in English and the target language(s), and uses medical dictionaries effectively.

Executes dispatching duties as assigned and schedules appointments for services.

Acts as liaison between staff and patient/visitors to meet their needs.

Supports cross-cultural communication throughout the institution by sharing cultural factors influencing health behaviors.

Assists in the orientation and training of volunteers and medical interpreters.

Develops and maintains records and produces reports by means of database.

Assist the supervisor in a variety of tasks as determined by the supervisor.

Follows institutional and departmental policies and procedures in all situations.

Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.

Performs related duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
Associate’s degree or equivalent and one year of written translation experience. Must speak, read, and write English and target language fluently.
Equipment:
Standard office equipment.
Working Environment:
Standard hospital, clinical and/or office environments. Rotation shifts that include weekends. Must possess the ability to stand for extended periods and walk throughout the work shift.
