JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for Litigation Case Management including analysis and strategic review of information and documentation for case defense; prepares answers, discovery responses, affidavits, case summaries, witness lists, chronologies and pleadings. Prepares medical record summaries and assists with expert report summaries.  Communicates directly with witnesses and defendants in order to investigate and analyze information needed for litigation defense and responses.

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides guidance, advice, leadership and direction to support staff involved in litigation. 

  • Demonstrates familiarity with standard litigation concepts, practices and procedures for UTMB and act as a technical referral point for litigation and litigation related matters, including planning and preparation for e-discovery.

  • Investigates and prepares responses to EEOC Charges of Discrimination.

  • Manages general litigation docket and database.  Prepares and discusses litigation status reports with UTMB Administration to evaluate liabilities. 

  • Advises, directs, and trains litigation support staff.

  • Performs joint supervision of legal externs/interns, legal secretaries, and clerk.

  • Interfaces and handles inquiries from the UTMB Administration, UT System – Office of General Counsel and Office of the Attorney General. 

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors degree or equivalent or Legal Assistant Certification and five years related experience.

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard office environments.
