Job Summary:
To audit healthcare related activities, health information management and medical records operation in order to evaluate and report on the adequacy and effectiveness of controls, compliance activities, and policies and procedures.
Major Duties / Critical Tasks:
- Responsible for conducting audits of healthcare related activities, health information management and medical records operations.
- Assists in examining larger, more complex systems.
- Gathers information on an operation through questionnaires, interviews with operating personnel, and review of operational information. Describes the operation using flowcharts or narratives.
- Identifies key control points in a system or operation and evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of these controls.
- Develops the audit program. Decides the records or activities to analyze, the methods to obtain and evaluate the data and the work papers to prepare. Uses sampling methods when appropriate. Uses software (ACL or Access) to analyze data for the audit work in moderately complex situations.
- Review transactions, documents, reports, etc., for accuracy and effectiveness using standard audit techniques.
- Prepares work papers that meet departmental and professional standards and provide sufficient, competent and relevant information to form an opinion on the operation.
- Discusses apparent deficiencies with operation personnel to verify facts and determine causes for deficiencies. Draws conclusions based on sufficient information. Develops recommendations for the correction of unsatisfactory conditions, improvements in operations and reductions in cost.
- Writes audit findings and recommendations that meet departmental standards. Uses word processor to draft reports and necessary audit documentation.
- Organizes and maintains the audit file in compliance with departmental standards.
- Interacts with business administration department heads on routine basis and establishes good working conditions.
- Acts as lead auditor on small, non-complex audits. As lead auditor, allocates tasks to auditors and directs their daily performance, supervises the audit work, reviews work papers and resolves questions and verifies conclusions are supported, keeps Manager informed of audit progress, manages the audit so that time is efficiently and effectively used and departmental quality assurance standards are met. Also, provides information or advice to department heads, formulates alternative solutions to problems, sells ideas and obtains acceptance and actions on audit findings.
- General supervision on moderately complex audits with some choice of method. Direct supervision on larger, more complex audits.
- Performs assigned duties as required.
Required Education / Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a medical administration, healthcare, auditing or other related field. Three years auditing, systems analysis, healthcare or medical administration experience.
